ABOUT THE PAINTING
The red admiral butterfly is endemic to New Zealand, and quite a rare sight these days, so I'm always thrilled when I catch sight of one of these in the wild. I love how beautifully the red contrasts with the black and white on the ends of their wings, and also how soft and fluffy the undersides of their bodies are, which I have tried to capture in this painting. This one has just landed on a spray of purple wild sage (Salvia Farinacea), hoping for a tasty feast of nectar.
