ABOUT THE PAINTING
The big, bright and beautiful monarch butterfly is a native of New Zealand - it introduced itself here most likely in the early 1800's, from North America. They can travel incredible distances - some have been known to travel 5000 kilometres! The one in this painting is enjoying a rest on a baby ponga (silver fern) frond.
When deciding on the composition for this piece, I chose to have the monarch perch on the unfurling fern to mirror the curled up shape of the butterfly's proboscis, which reminded me of a koru!
