ABOUT THE PAINTING
I love how a baby black robin looks almost spherical in shape - like an adorable fuzzy black pompom with a beak! This is the look I wanted to capture in this painting, as well as the contrast between the black plumage and the bright red pohutukawa flowers.
The NZ black robin is rare and narrowly escaped extinction with only 5 left in the world in 1980! Thanks to the amazing efforts of conservationists, a stable population in the Chatham Islands is now well established.
