ABOUT THE PAINTING
This juvenile little owl is wondering what strange creature is sharing his fencepost!

Little owls are smaller than the Morepork, measuring only 22cm tall, and are widespread in the East coast of the South Island.  They mostly inhabit farmland and urban areas, living mainly off insects, and are often seen perched out in the open during daylight hours.

The caterpillar in this painting is a Magpie Moth caterpillar - these are otherwise known as ‘Woolly Bears’ because of their bristles.  I remember searching for them on the cinerarias in our garden when I was a kid - being used to the usual smooth green kind of caterpillar, I was enchanted to discover that black fuzzy ones existed!

The flowers depicted are meadow sage, a beautiful wild variety of our culinary herb.  I chose a purple theme to tone with the soft browns of the owl's feathers, and the rustic wood colours.
