The plumage of a kingfisher is a spectacular study in blues - from bright shades of aqua to beautiful sapphire, vivid azure and deepest ultramarine.

In this painting, my aim was to capture the freshness and colours of an early morning in spring.

The grey warbler is the second smallest bird in New Zealand and is extremely light, weighing only 6 grams. 

It has quite incredible eyes, of a translucent coppery red, which, along with the jewel-like hawthorn berries, was my inspiration for the name of this painting.

The morepork, also known as 'ruru' because of it's distinctive, melancholy call, is one of New Zealand's two remaining native owl species.

Baby moreporks are one of my favourite creatures to paint because of their beautiful golden yellow eyes and intense, comical expressions - amidst all the fluff! 

In this piece I enjoyed combining the warm brown and yellow tones of the owl with the delicate blues of the wild cornflowers.   If you look carefully, you'll also see another little creature lurking in the foliage, perhaps hoping to escape the notice of the owl!

Fantails I think are one of our most endearing native birds - with their fat little bodies, cheeky personalities, and spectacular tails.  I love the way they follow you around, looking enthusiastically for little insects you might have disturbed.

In this work, I wanted to capture the fantail's inquisitive nature, as well as the delicate beauty of our native flora.
